So, I was excited to see that Starbucks was offering a smoothie to their customers. They advertise it in the store as: "Made with: 1 whole banana, real strawberry puree, whey protein & fiber powder, fresh 2% milk, and only 280 calories" but...
This is what they are not telling you:
Calories 280
Fat Calories 5
Total Fat (g) .5
Saturated Fat (g) 0
Trans Fat (g) 0
Cholesterol (mg) 5
Sodium (mg) 110
Total Carbohydrates (g) 56
Fiber (g) 7
Sugars (g) 41
Protein (g) 16
Vitamin A 4%
Vitamin C 100%
Calcium 10%
Iron 10%
Caffeine (mg) 0
I highlighted the sugar for one, because on a 2000 calorie diet, one should only consume 40g/day... so that means that this drink is all of the sugar you should have in a whole day.... if you are on a 2000 cal diet. But who is? I know I consume between 1600/1800 calories a day, so this is over my limit. Now when I am not exercising to the extreme, I drop my calorie intake back to 1200-1400 cal/day.
Also, if you are wanting to lose weight, the daily recommendation is between 20-50 grams of carbs a day. This smoothie: 56.
This is a wake up call! Be sure that when places are offering "healthy alternatives" to ask more questions. Ask to see the nutrition facts for yourself. Make wise choices.
And just think, people are getting the smoothie with a muffin. UGH! No wonder Americans are among the fattest in the world.
