A Snappy 8 miler

I decided to run my 8 miles before the county fair... and I am SOOO glad I did. It was a gorgeous sunny day... and HOT. I have sunburn to prove it. I would not have wanted to run after the fair.

It was a nice morning... with temps in the upper 60s when I started. As I was debating whether to run before or after the fair, I told my hubby, "It is just too nice to pass up." I never thought I would look at the weather that way.

I decided to run the same path as I ran Wednesday evening, just backwards. I did not really think about it... but it had more hills this way. The first one was right at mile 1. I was worried by split would look bad... so I pushed extra hard.

Here are my splits:

Mile 1: 8:30
Mile 2: 8:45 (huge hill)
Mile 3: 9:10 (still tired from hill)
Mile 4: 9:05
Mile 5: 9:06
Mile 6: 9:10 (snapping turtle)
Mile 7: 9:09
Mile 8: 9:23 (legs felt really tired)

I ran faster than the night before. At mile 6, I came across the BIGGEST snapping turtle I had EVER seen. I guy driving a dump truck was trying to get the turtle out of the road so no one ran over it. I think he looked to me to help him... but it was huge. Of course I did not have my camera... but it was actually much bigger than this picture. After about 1 minute, another driver stopped. He was very matter-of-fact about it and just picked it up. Every time it would try to snap him, he just let go. Eventually, he got him off the road into the weeds. The problem was that the turtle wanted to go to the other side of the road to get to the little pond. I am sure the turtle wandered back into the street later. Right after the 2nd man was leaving, the dump truck guy said to us, "I'd really like to eat him." Funny... it wasn't my first thought.

I finished in 1:12:35 - faster than the night before. We had a nice day at the fair and did not even eat the deep fried oreos or funnel cakes. I did have ice cream though.

Tomorrow I have 17 miles on the schedule. Bob is away, so I have to run them all by myself. I am nervous... but if I can do 16 by myself, I can do 17, right?

I love turtle!!! I wish you had the camera. I love seeing all the wildlife people come across.

I hope he made it to that little pond.

WOWzers. 8 miles and then 17 miles. I know you can do it. I miss long runs! I hope the talk with hubbs this weekend helps lift the hubbs imposed racing strike. I'll think of you on your 17 miler!

Oh my goodness! I wouldn't want to touch the snapping turtle either...and I would never think of wanting to eat one. gross.

Nice job on your 8-miler. Sounds like you made the right choice in doing it early! You sure are speedy, girl! WOW!

I'm not sure what I would do if I came across a snapping turtle while I was out and about
