Run'in in the Rain

I have discovered that I LOVE running in the rain during the summer. On Saturday, I had to run really early as we had family plans that meant leaving our house at 7:45. I convinced Bob to meet me at 4:45 am. It was still dark when we started on Rock Creek Trail from Lake Needwood. It was raining- hard. It was slightly cool.

I think I would have enjoyed it more had it not been pitch black. I mean the fireflies seemed like flash lights in the woods. Every noise freaked me out. Sometimes we would hear a noise in the woods and Bob would turn his head lamp in the direction and we would see eyes or deer. Other times, my heart was pounding so quickly that I just knew that some wold animal was going to eat us up. On the flip side, I wasn't worried about any bad people. (I find that interesting now though). And poor Bob... he only saw the rain falling. We ran the first 5.5 with the head lamp on the path.

Another positive of the run was that on the way back, it didn't seem boring. Usually, on an out and back run, I get bored of the scenery because it is old news. But since we ran the first half in the dark, it wasn't. I enjoyed that. And the RAIN. The GLORIOUS rain. It felt so refreshing. We had 2 miles where the rain stopped and the humidity started to creep up - those were tough.  I enjoyed the rain as it kept me cool.

We ran 11 miles in 2:08:12. Slower than I had thought, but it was a good run. Bob was feeling a little dizzy at the end and said I could go ahead... but we started together and were going to finish together. After all, long runs are about mileage, not speed, right!

We quickly devoured the watermelon and protein drink as I needed to get home. The best part of the run was that around mile 9 we started to see people. Up until that mile, I was had Bob COMPLETELY to myself. The marathon group that I was going to train with (until I connected with Bob) was just starting their long run. I said to Bob, "There has to be some kind of satisfaction knowing that we are finishing our long run and they are just starting!" I think he agreed.

I was home by 7:18am. Good run. GREAT company! Week #2 of marathon training complete!

Sounds lovely! It is nice to be done when the rest of the world is just starting, I agree! And love Rock Creek Park--beautiful locale for a run. (the new background looks great, btw)

I like the new background, but the gray text is a bit hard to read - at least for the first part.

Great job on your long run! I love to start early, although I also would have been FREAKING in the dark!!
